Zam Bestray Steel Cable Trays | The Current Alternative to Steel
Currently, steel prices are rising rapidly, so to reduce production costs, Bestray Company has researched an alternative material: galvanized steel sheets.
Bestray JSC., – one of the leading cable tray manufacturers in Vietnam, specializes in galvanized steel cable trays. So what is galvanized steel?
1. What is Zam roofing sheet, and what is its structure?
- ZAM: This is an abbreviation formed from the first letters of the materials Zinc (Zn), Aluminum (Al), and Magnesium (Mg).
- ZAM steel is an alloy of steel with zinc, aluminum, and magnesium, developed by Nippon Steel of Japan.
ZAM steel is coated with aluminum and magnesium in precise proportions of 6% aluminum and 3% magnesium to increase product durability. Therefore, ZAM steel has superior corrosion resistance compared to hot-dip galvanized steel and Galfan steel.

– In there :
Mg: Increases rust resistance
Aluminum (Al): Increases oxidation resistance (without the Al component, the surface of the steel sheet would turn black).
Zinc: Provides rust protection at cut edges because zinc is more reactive than steel.
– Zam’s anti-corrosion mechanism: ZAM is a special anti-corrosion alloy coating containing 91% zinc, 6% aluminum, and 3% magnesium.
ZAM steel has been proven to be up to 10 times more effective at resisting corrosion than galvanized steel. The chemical properties of 6% aluminum and 3% magnesium are the main factors contributing to this characteristic of ZAM steel.

The corrosion resistance of Zn-Al-Mg alloys is due to the formation of a stable oxide layer. This layer provides better protection than zinc oxides. This layer can resist corrosion for a long time because the Zn-Al-Mg alloy layer hinders the oxidation process of the steel material.
Compared to conventional galvanized steel, ZAM is galvanized using an advanced technical process, heated and cooled in a thermal cycle under strict control by a computer system. Therefore, the surface properties and structure of ZAM are always uniform, glossy, and provide superior corrosion resistance.
2. Advantages of Zam roofing sheets
ZAM steel has been researched and developed to improve the corrosion resistance of steel materials in environments with many corrosive factors. ZAM steel is coated with a thinner layer but provides better protection for steel than conventional paint. This thinner coating therefore saves on investment costs. At the same time, ZAM steel also has many advantages over other protective coatings for steel materials:
– Longer lifespan
– Lower maintenance costs
– The weight of the coating is lower compared to coatings of other metals.
– Reduce costs
– Environmentally friendly.
3. Research studies on Zam steel (sourced from Nippon Steel)
3.1. Corrosion resistance when exposed to the outdoors:
ZAM steel sheets demonstrate approximately four times higher corrosion resistance compared to hot-dip galvanized steel sheets (based on the results of 8 years of exposure testing).

| Implementation environment | Location |
| Rural environment | Kiryu-City, Gunma |
| Marine environment | Nakagusukuson, Okinawa (approximately 30 meters from the shoreline) |
3.2. Scratch resistance of the coating
ZAM has a harder coating than galvanized steel sheet or hot-dip galvanized aluminum-zinc alloy. Therefore, ZAM offers better scratch resistance and can be used in applications where it is subjected to repeated scratching and friction during processing.

This is the most unique feature: the ZAM steel surface has the ability to react to the installation environment, creating a protective film over holes made during processing and scratches made during installation. In other words, the ZAM surface has a self-healing ability similar to animal skin.
This capability allows for the reduction of many technological steps in cable tray production (transportation, cleaning, hot-dip galvanizing, deburring). Therefore, it minimizes production costs, resulting in a competitive price comparable to conventional, inexpensive black steel products.
3.3. Corrosion protection on flat surfaces
ZAM offers better corrosion resistance compared to 5% zinc-aluminum alloy coated steel and hot-dip galvanized steel.

3.4. Corrosion resistance at the cutting edge
ZAM demonstrates better resistance to red rust (durability) on the cut edge than any other coated steel sheet.
3.5. Corrosion protection of curved sections
ZAM® demonstrates better corrosion (red rust) resistance even at bends than any other coated steel sheet.
3.6. Corrosion resistance of cross-sections
ZAM showed better corrosion resistance on drawn parts compared to hot-dip galvanized 5% aluminum-zinc alloy coated steel sheets.
3.7. Acid/Alkali Resistance
In acidic and alkaline aqueous solutions, ZAM exhibits corrosive properties similar to other galvanized steel sheets.
3.8. Ammonia resistance
ZAM demonstrates superior ammonia resistance compared to hot-dip galvanized steel sheets with 55% aluminum-zinc alloy coating and hot-dip galvanized steel.
Outstanding in both ammonia and moisture resistance, ZAM is suitable for use in harsh environments such as livestock barns and composting facilities that are highly corrosive and humid (due to animal feces, urine, and breath).
4. Applications of Zam roofing sheets
- Zam steel is used as a structural material for housing construction.
- Additionally, Zam steel is used as a wave-spreading and soundproofing material in electrical appliances, and as a material in air conditioning and containers.
- Zam steel is used for traffic signals, power supply materials, electrical cabinets, agricultural materials, greenhouse materials, and some agricultural equipment.
- Applications include cable ladders, cable trays, wire mesh cable trays, cable ducts, and cable duct accessories.
